Lucky are those for whom cooking is a joy: they relax, create, and entertain others all while obtaining one of life’s necessities. It’s a beautiful thing. But there are plenty of us who just don’t reach that same nirvana when we turn on the oven. Whether it’s because we don’t feel we have the time, we know we will always mess up the recipe, or we simply have something else we’d rather do, there are so many of us who don’t love cooking. And, yet, we must do it. We could eat out all the time, but that would get expensive. Cooking for oneself is a cheaper and potentially healthier option. Let’s take a look at some ways we can start to like cooking just a little bit more.
Build expertise
There’s nothing quite like feeling like a pro at something to make it more fun to do. If you’ve got the time and the money, you might take a cooking class. Lots of kitchen stores offer one-day or short-term classes that teach you a few techniques and how to make a couple dishes. If you get really into it, you could enroll in a culinary tech program, where you’ll learn tons of skills, techniques, and dishes. You’ll soon be able to treat your family and friends to all sorts of gourmet stuff, and you’ll have great party knowledge! As you get better and better, you might start developing your own recipes. Remember, the culinary arts are a creative art, and can be an effective means of self-expression! It feels good to create.
Find a favorite appliance
Cooking doesn’t just happen in an oven or over a stove. There are lots of other food-creation appliances out there just waiting for us to find them. For some people, finding the right method of preparing food is the ticket. One great option is the crock pot! Crock pots are really effective for cooking meat and making soups and chilis. You basically throw all the ingredients in the pot and leave it for several hours. It doesn’t take a ton of skill, and the prep time is pretty low. There’s also this amazing appliance called a blender. Blenders are great for making smoothies, hummus, purees, and even some soups. You can buy tiny blenders as well that make single-serving smoothies. This is a great way to have a healthy breakfast or snack. You should also check out bread machines. You stick all the ingredients in the machine, and then it does the rest of the work for you: kneading the dough, letting it rise, and baking! Your house will smell wonderful, and you’ll have hot, fresh bread in just a few hours.
Get hippie dippy with it
Why not develop two hobbies at once? If you start a garden, you can grow your own ingredients. If you’ve ever had fresh produce from the farmers market, you know just how delicious it is. Even if you don’t have a plot of land, you can grow herbs in pots and have a fun little corner garden. Growing your own ingredients is better for the planet, too, because it cuts down on the energy it takes to transport the food from far away. Additionally, plants clean the air and give us oxygen.
